SUMMARY:Korean Peninsula Peace Forum 2022: Canada's role in the Korean Peninsula and the Indo-Pacific
DESCRIPTION:The Peaceful Unification Advisory Council (PUAC) Toronto (https://puac-toronto.com/) is hosting a forum to bring together influential Canadians in politics\, diplomacy\, foreign affairs\, defence\, business\, academia and media to discuss the opportunities and challenges of Korea and Canada partnership in the Indo-Pacific and Canada’s role in the Korean peninsula’s peace process. \nCanada’s Role in the Korean Peninsula & the Indo-Pacific \nCanada is currently working on the Indo-Pacific Strategy. The US and other major allies have released their strategies. Canada is expected to take a more active role in the Indo-Pacific region\, working together with Korea and other like-minded Canadian allies and partners in the region. SUMMARY:Competition law reform in Canada: Risks and opportunities
DESCRIPTION:With the rise of the digital economy\, the prominence of “big tech” has raised an important question: does competition law need a fundamental rethink? Or can more modest changes allow longstanding tools to be effectively applied to promote competition to the benefit of consumers? \nThis fall\, the federal government will be launching a consultation on potential reforms to the Competition Act. What do the recent changes to the Competition Act passed as part of last spring’s budget potentially foreshadow? What further reforms should the government consider and which should they steer clear of? SUMMARY:Meeting the North Korea challenge: Regional security and human rights
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\nNorth Korea continues to be a significant regional security threat in the Indo-Pacific region with a sustained and evolving weapons of mass destruction (WMD) program and growing ballistic missile arsenal. In addition to this regional security challenge\, Pyongyang remains one of the most repressive countries in the world. According to Human Rights Watch\, authorities in North Korea routinely send perceived opponents of the government to secretive prison camps where they face torture\, starvation rations\, and forced labour. Indeed\, the country has a horrendous human rights record\, where fear of punitive measures is used as a stick to silence dissent. In addition\, North Korea has a record of other flagrant violations\, including the unresolved abduction of numerous Japanese citizens over several years. SUMMARY:Critical race theory: Useful paradigm or fringe ideology?
DESCRIPTION: \nIn recent years\, critical race theory (CRT) has grown to influence how people and institutions around the world approach matters of identity\, inequality\, patriotism\, and more. Canada is no exception. CRT has influenced government legislation\, corporate employment practices\, and public education. \nHowever\, despite its influence\, CRT remains relatively unexamined in Canada. \nFor many\, the theory is seen as a step in the right direction. CRT proponents believe that it provides a useful framework that can help those in positions of power examine their biases and confront racism\, ultimately correcting otherwise latent issues in our society. DESCRIPTION:Annually\, Canada’s economy loses billions of dollars of productivity due to a web of rules\, regulations\, and restrictions between provinces. However\, solving Canada’s internal trade woes has remained a stubborn problem. How can the provinces untie this trade knot? \nOne potential solution is mutual recognition – that is\, a policy whereby regulatory requirements met for one provincial and territorial government automatically satisfies requirements for another. SUMMARY:More food or less fertilizer? Policy pain in the Canadian agriculture sector and its global implications
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\nRussia’s invasion of Ukraine and subsequent blockade of Ukrainian grain and agricultural exports serve as a stark reminder that a rules-based trading system is integral to human well-being. With the risk of famine becoming critical across dozens of countries\, Canada has a big role to play in helping feed a growing and hungry world; our security is inherently tied to it\, our prosperity as a country depends on it\, and our moral compass demands it. \nThe federal government has announced a target to reduce fertilizer emissions by 30 percent from 2022 levels by 2030. Grain and oil seed producers have warned that this move will reduce their competitiveness\, drive up costs and impede production. The agriculture ministers in Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, Manitoba and Ontario have all cried foul\, asserting that the target is arbitrary and has been imposed without consultation. \nWhat are the implications of the proposed fertilizer policy? How are Canadian agricultural producers already addressing GHG emissions and what more can be done?
