SUMMARY:Breaking down barriers: The benefits and trade-offs of liberalizing internal trade
DESCRIPTION:Annually\, Canada’s economy loses billions of dollars of productivity due to a web of rules\, regulations\, and restrictions between provinces. However\, solving Canada’s internal trade woes has remained a stubborn problem. How can the provinces untie this trade knot? \nOne potential solution is mutual recognition – that is\, a policy whereby regulatory requirements met for one provincial and territorial government automatically satisfies requirements for another. In MLI’s latest paper\, authors Ryan Manucha and Trevor Tombe explore the policy\, finding that it may represent an important next step toward liberalizing internal trade. \nTo better understand the practical economic and legal considerations at play\, MLI is hosting a webinar on the benefits of and drawbacks from mutual recognition. \nEvent Details: \n\nDate: Thursday\, September 29\, 2022\n  3:00 pm – 4:00 pm EDT\n\nPlease note\, that all registered attendees will receive a post-event recording of the webinar. If you are unable to tune in live\, you can watch the recording at your convenience. \nSpeakers \n \nRegister for this webinar below: \n

SUMMARY:Hydrogen: An opportunity for German-Canadian partnership
DESCRIPTION:When German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met in Canada recently\, they announced their intention to work together on providing a stable and secure supply of a new type of energy to meet German demand: hydrogen. \nThough still in its nascent stages\, there are unique economic and security opportunities for both countries that could be unlocked through the Canada-Germany Hydrogen Alliance. But what are the challenges that must be overcome to seize these opportunities? How can Canada avoid the hurdles that have frustrated resource development\, production\, and export for decades? What must be done to move from potential opportunities toward realized benefits for both Canadian and German societies? \nIn this webinar\, Canadian and German experts will discuss these important questions. This conversation is tied to a forthcoming paper to be jointly published by the Macdonald-Laurier Institute and EPICO\, which will explore the opportunities and challenges of building a hydrogen partnership. \n\n\n\n\nEvent Details: \n\nDate: Monday\, September 12\nTime: 9:00 am – 10:00 am EDT\n\nPlease note\, that all registered attendees will receive a post-event recording of the webinar. If you are unable to tune in live\, you can watch the recording at your convenience. \n\n\n\n\nSpeakers \n \nRegister for this webinar below: \n\n\n

SUMMARY:More food or less fertilizer? Policy pain in the Canadian agriculture sector and its global implications
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\nRussia’s invasion of Ukraine and subsequent blockade of Ukrainian grain and agricultural exports serve as a stark reminder that a rules-based trading system is integral to human well-being. With the risk of famine becoming critical across dozens of countries\, Canada has a big role to play in helping feed a growing and hungry world; our security is inherently tied to it\, our prosperity as a country depends on it\, and our moral compass demands it. \nThe federal government has announced a target to reduce fertilizer emissions by 30 percent from 2022 levels by 2030. Grain and oil seed producers have warned that this move will reduce their competitiveness\, drive up costs and impede production. The agriculture ministers in Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, Manitoba and Ontario have all cried foul\, asserting that the target is arbitrary and has been imposed without consultation. \nWhat are the implications of the proposed fertilizer policy? How are Canadian agricultural producers already addressing GHG emissions and what more can be done? And what should we be doing to ensure Canada is in a position to address global food needs\, as famine looms on the horizon? \nMLI will gather experts to discuss Canada’s role in global food security\, the fertilizer emissions reduction target\, and innovative ways the agriculture sector can evolve to become even more sustainable and productive. \n\n\n\n\nEvent Details: \n\nDate: Thursday\, August 18\nTime: 11:00 am – 12:30 pm EDT / 9:00 am – 10:30 am CT\n\nPlease note\, that all registered attendees will receive a post-event recording of the webinar. If you are unable to tune in live\, you can watch the recording at your convenience. \n\n\n\n\nSpeakers \n \nRegister for this webinar below: \n\n\n

SUMMARY:The journey ahead: The next steps for reconciliation after the papal visit
DESCRIPTION:The July 2022 visit of Pope Francis was both historic and vital for Indigenous peoples. The trip was built around a series of apologies for the church’s role in residential schools and the colonization of Indigenous peoples more generally. This webinar explores the significant and potential impact of the Pope’s recent visit from two perspectives: that of the affected Indigenous peoples and communities and the Roman Catholic Church. The discussion will consider Indigenous expectations\, church priorities\, and the public interest in this large-scale effort of meaningful reconciliation. \n\n\n\n\nEvent Details: \n\nDate: Thursday\, August 11\nTime: 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm EDT\n\nPlease note\, that all registered attendees will receive a post-event recording of the webinar.
